DAKOTA DUNES
Whitecap, SK
Dakota Dunes Golf is in a class of its own. Located in Whitecap, Saskatchewan it opened in 2004, and was created through a partnership between Whitecap Dakota First Nation Council, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band to transform a landscape with limited agricultural opportunities into a top-flight golf course. The course is laid out over natural sand dune formations with fairways bounded by prairie grasses, and has been described as winding through an “exhilarating” and isolated landscape. Dakota Dunes was the host of the Saskatchewan Open in 2008, which was won by New Zealand’s Josh Geary. The course was designed to minimize disturbance to the high-stabilized dunes and older dune complexes that form many of the bunkers on the course. It is known for its unique, rolling terrain and special character on each hole.
Course.
DAKOTA DUNES.
Set amongst natural sand dune formations with fairways bounded by prairie grasses, the course winds its way through a remote and exhilarating landscape. The dunes, some of which reach heights of 20 to 25 feet, are home to an abundance of wildflowers, prickly pear, purple cacti, and native shrubs. The emerald fairways and waving fescue contrast beautifully against the wide-open Saskatchewan sky.
The course is laid out in two returning loops of nine holes and was formed by wind-swept sand dunes created by the flow of the Saskatchewan River into Glacial Lake Saskatchewan and shaped by strong post-glacial winds. The terrain rolls and tumbles over and around the sand dunes, giving each hole its own special character and feel. Great care was taken to limit disturbance to the high-stabilized dunes and the older dune complexes that form many of the bunkers on the course. With numerous natural holes to choose from, the 18 holes at Dakota Dunes Golf Links are a true complement to this unique and wonderful property.
