MICKELSON NATIONAL
Calgary, AB
The Mickelson National Golf Club in Calgary, Canada opened in summer 2020 after 13 years of development by the Windmill Golf Group. The course was originally intended to be a collaboration between Johnny Miller and Stephen Ames called the Copithorne Club, but was later taken over by the Phil Mickelson Design team in 2014. The course is part of a community development called Harmony, which will eventually include close to 4,000 houses on 1,750 acres. The course is currently open to the public but will become private as membership grows. The 10th hole, a par four with a split fairway separated by a bunker, and the 16th hole, a short par four with a significant drop from tee to green, have received praise. The course also features a unique area called “the abyss,” which includes three par three holes in a horseshoe shape meant to resemble a natural sand bunker. It is hoped that the Canadian Open will be held at the course in the future.
